Scales, Modes & Tonality

Modes have been around even longer than the mandolin. The illustration here is from the 1500’s, from a manuscript of Spanish vihuela music.  You can read for yourself, if you understand early Spanish and if you understand early Spanish music theory, that this music is for Vihuela in A (fa) using the second tone, or Dorian mode (I think!).

So as cool and as new to some ears as this may seem, it’s truely basic in nature and has stood the test of time surviving in many forms of music particularly European folk, modern pop and rock, and of course in jazz.

So what are the modes and where did they come from?  Originally, they came from the Medieval church. Although be it said that many scales and modes are used in settings other than Christianity or the church, the established academics relate its origin to the main ruling entity of Europe when music, particularly harmony, was developing into what we now refer to as functional harmony.

As classical music developed in Europe, the modes evolved into what we currently call major and minor scales and the use of the harmonic Dominant to Tonic relationship took over the earlier modality. While the great masters were doing their great work, folk traditions maintained these earlier modes and preserved them for use today.  So in today’s popular music, we find both elements of modality and functional harmony with leading tones creating tritones that often want to resolve to a more consonant home of the tonic.

If you’re lost in all this, don’t worry. If you’re curious to learn more, there’s a little more here and a lot more in books on music theory.  What is presented here is an introduction to those harmonies that sound so cool in jazz and in pop music.

The Modes

The seven diatonic (or “church”) modes can be most easily laid out on the white keys of the piano. What we now know as major is also referred to in modal terms as the Ionian Mode. And what we regard as minor, i.e. the “natural” minor, in modal terms would be referred to as the Aeolian Mode. (also read “The G-L Factor Found in the Diatonic Modes”.)

The Ionian Mode or major scale would can be played on the piano’s white keys from C to C. The Aeolian Mode or the natural minor scale would be played on white keys A to A.  Similarly, the seven diatonic modes are outlined by playing the white keys from one pitch to the same pitch an octave up as outlined below.

  • Ionian mode –
    • identical to the major scale
    • “c” to “c” using white notes on the piano
  • Dorian mode –
    • a minor scale with a raised 6th scale degree
    • “d” to “d” using white notes on the piano
  • Phrygian mode –
    • a minor scale with a lowered 2nd scale degree
    • “e” to “e” using white notes on the piano
  • Lydian mode –
    • a major scale with a raised 4th scale degree
    • “f to “f” using white notes on the piano
  • Mixolydian mode –
    • a major scale with a lowered 7th scale degree
    • “g” to “g” using white notes on the piano
  • Aeolian mode –
    • identical to the “natural” minor scale
    • “a” to “a” using white notes on the piano
  • Locrian mode –
    •  a minor scale (or better termed “diminished scale”) with a lowered 2nd and a lowered 5th scale degree
    • “b” to “b” using white notes on the piano

Here they are again organized as major or minor.

Major Modes (3rd degree raised)

    • Ionian (the familiar major scale)
    • Lydian (raised 4th)
    • Mixolydian (lowered 7th)

Minor Modes (3rd degree lowered)

    • Aeolian (the familiar “natural” minor scale)
    • Dorian  (raised 6th)
    • Phrygian (lowered  2nd)

Diminished Mode

    • Locrian (lowered 2nd & 5th)

Much of the time, the music we hear in jazz or pop that sounds major is really the mixolydian mode and similarly what sounds minor is often actually the dorian mode.  Some good listening examples of music in  myxolydian would be “She’s a Brick House”, “Sultans of Swing”, “She’s a Woman”. Examples of dorian would be the carol “What Child is This” or “Greensleeves”, “Scarborough Fair”, “Kind of Blue”.

    Density/Expansivity in Music

    Sound can be dense or expansive, relatively speaking. In fact, any element of sound or of music can have its own density/expansivity attributes that contribute to the overall density/expansivity of a sound, of a piece or music, of an ensemble, or any element of music or sound. We hear nearly all tonal music (particularly Western tonal music) in either a major or minor key. The home base of any key is the tonic triad made up of scale degrees 1, 3, and 5.
